Aren't snakes slimey?
Many amphibians have a layer of 'slime' to protect their skin from drying out, but reptiles, snakes, aren't slimey. They may be cold or wet, but not slimey.
What do snakes eat?
Most pet snakes eat rodents - mice or rats, depending on the size of the snake. In the wild, various snakes eat toads, frogs, fish, lizards, slugs, earthworms, crickets and other bugs, in addition to rodents. Some snakes eat other snakes, and some can catch birds to eat. One type of snake eats eggs. The largest snakes can eat wild pigs and even small antelope.
Do snakes have eyelids?
No. They have a protective layer over their eyes that shed when snakes shed their skin.
Are Anacondas good pets?
No. Anacondas are likely the most aggressive snake species and do not make good pets. Also, because of their size and habits, it would be very difficult for almost anyone to provide the proper housing for them.
Do snakes smell bad?
Like all pets, reptiles have their own distinct odor. Unless their cage is not cleaned regularly, snakes don't smell bad and most people can't smell them at all.
Why do snakes flick their tongue out?
Snakes smell with their tongues, and since their eyesite isn't good, that is how they get about.
Can I catch any diseases from a snake?
Not generally. By using common sense and washing your hands before and after handling any reptile, you can cut your chance of Salmonella problems to almost zero.
Can they get out of their cage?
A tight fitting (preferably locking) lid is needed to keep snakes where they are supposed to be. Snakes are escape artists, so the lid thing is very important.
Do snakes lay eggs or have live babies?
Both. Pythons lay eggs, while Boas have live babies.
